Shoulder Pain

Relief for Shoulder Pain from Mississauga's European Massage and Physiotherapy Center

The shoulder endures a lot of use on a daily basis, whether your days are mainly confined to shuffling papers at a desk, or involve something more vigorous such as throwing a fastball, working a construction site, or meticulously organizing a tough landscaping project. In response to so much movement, muscle strain and shoulder pain from everyday wear-and-tear is a common complaint.

At the European Massage and Physiotherapy Center, our goal is to help diagnose problems like these and treat them accordingly. Below are some of the common conditions we treat.

Specific Conditions

In addition to overuse or strain, tendon inflammation, or less common causes such as tumors, infections and nerve-related problems, other conditions that can cause shoulder pain include:

Bursitis

Bursae are small, fluid-filled sacs that cushion the bones, tendons and muscles near your joints. Bursitis often affects the shoulder because that joint performs frequent repetitive motions. Bursae that cushion the ball-and-socket joints of the shoulders can become inflamed or swollen from overuse. This causes pain even while performing normal daily activities, such as getting dressed or combing your hair.

Tendinitis

Tendinitis describes the degeneration of tendons on the shoulder around the rotator cuff. A tendon is a strong cord that connects muscle to bone. When age or injury causes a tendon to weaken, it can split or become torn. Tendonitis is generally classified as either acute or chronic. Acute tendonitis is caused by strain or overuse, typically through sports or other vigorous activity, while chronic (degenerative) tendonitis is usually attributable to degenerative diseases such as arthritis, or repetitive wear-and-tear due to age.

Fractures

A fracture is a broken bone; shoulder fractures typically affect the clavicle (collarbone), humerus (upper arm bone) or scapula (shoulder blade). Symptoms of a fracture include severe pain, swelling and bruising around the site of the injury.

Dislocation

Dislocation occurs when the ball of the arm partially or completely comes out of the shoulder socket. Dislocation is commonly caused by an injury or a fall. Symptoms of a dislocated shoulder include tenderness, swelling and bruising, as well as intense pain as soon as the injury is sustained. Because the shoulder is supremely mobile in order to allow you to twist and move your upper arm in almost any direction, the joint is inherently unstable and prone to slipping out of place.

In some severe cases of dislocated shoulder, the tissue and nerves around the shoulder joint may become damaged. Once a shoulder has dislocated, it may become more prone to a repeat occurrence. If you continue to dislocate your shoulder, it can cause chronic instability and weakness in the joint.
